MOUTH-ESOPHAGEAL ORAL CANCER

Esophageal cancer is one of the most deadliest of all cancers with a 10 to 15 percent five-year survival rate. Blacks have a higher rate, possibly due to increase in smoking and alcohol. Fruits and vegetables have strong support, showing decreased risk of cancer in the oral area. Studies also support that beta-carotene, Vitamin C, and selenium have some preventative value. Other antioxidants found beneficial in prevention support tocopherals or the family of Vitamin E, polyphenols, and flavonoids.

Green tea has shown some benefits to protection in smokers. Curcumin, a powerful antioxidant agent, also may have benefits in smokers. The two biggest risk factors for oral carcinoma were smoking and alcohol. Nitrites found in beer, meats, and fish also increase risk. Alcohol and smoking were reported to increase risk independent of diet. The problem is that a lot of individuals, who smoke and drink, also have poor consumption of fruits and vegetables.
