GARLIC

A quick overview of the use of garlic in cancer prevention. The active compound in garlic is allicin, which is converted to another chemical in the digestive process. Allicin is produced in the garlic clove and serves as protection from viruses, bacteria, and UV damage.

Garlic in humans has a very weak antibiotic effect. One study shows it to be one-one-hundredth as strong as penicillin. Garlic's potential to act as an antibiotic may lie more in the area of preventing bacterial colonization rather than In treatment.

Garlic has strong heart benefits and can be found in either the garlic or heart section of the health food store. Garlic has been suggested in the literature to decrease prostate cancer risk. Along with carotenoids found in fruits and vegetables, garlic may decrease the risk of adenomatous polyps, which can develop into colon cancer.

Garlic has an anti-proliferative effect on the growth of cells. Garlic also possesses anti-oxidant activity and works through the liver to help detoxify the body. It specifically works on the cytochrome P450 system in both Phase 1 and Phase 2 detoxification. By enhancing detoxification, garlic assists in eliminating toxins and their free radical induced damage. It is in this way garlic is felt to lower the risk of certain cancers.
