SODIUM RESTRICTION

Sodium restriction involves more than not adding salt to your food, but includes accounting for the sodium that is already in it, or, more likely, added to it. It requires reading labels and estimating the sodium content of your food. A desirable limit on sodium is 2GM or 2000 mg per day. Achieving this limit generally involves minimizing or avoiding prepared and processed foods.

A salt substitute could be considered. These are generally potassium chloride or potassium bicarbonate, and are available under the names "No-Salt" and "Nu-Salt." The typical amount of potassium in these is 530 mg per 1/6 teaspoon. Please be aware that iodine is an essential nutrient, necessary for the production of thyroid hormone, and potassium salts are not iodized.

Sodium restriction is helpful in lowering blood pressure, as well as in reducing fluid retention and swelling that accompanies such conditions as PMS, varicose veins, and kidney disease.
