THE FOOD GUIDE PYRAMID

The Food Guide Pyramid is endorsed by the US Department of Agriculture as being nutritious, calorically sound, and associated with a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, and some cancers. As well, if followed correctly, it will minimize your consumption of prepared and processed foods that can contain additives such as dyes, preservatives, flavor enhancers, and the like. It is a solid set of dietary guidelines to follow. See our handout on "Health and Wellness Through Nutrition," and the handout on the Food Guide Pyramid for details in implementing these important dietary changes. The Pyramid can also be accessed in the web site of the USDA at www.usda.gov.. The guiding principle is the consumption of fats and sweets in minimal amounts, and the consumption of fresh, whole fruits, vegetables, and grains in moderation and variety. The reasoning behind eating a variety of foods, is not to expose the GI tract and immune system to the same food antigens continuously, in order to minimize the chance of a chronic food allergy. Variety also provides a better opportunity to obtain the different nutrients found in the different foods.

Implicit in these dietary changes is the consumption of less fast food and take out, and more preparation of fresh food at home in a lower-cal lower-fat manner.
